As the head of the programme with an extensive history of taking part in youth empowerment projects, Ramel is a proud Belizean national, born right in one of the major cities. Spending the first years of his life in and around Belize City, Ramel seeks to give back to the nation he loves, by helping the fencing community in his home nation thrive, and in turn, empower the local youth by introducing them to the sport he loves.
A veteran fencer of seven years, Ramel was ranked as number 20 for men’s sabre in the island of Ireland in 2021. As the project head and main coach, Ramel intends to ignite a passion for fencing for young people in the country, harkening back to his roots in youth empowerment and communication.
A qualified coach -proving an inviable asset to the team at his native fencing club, Ulster University, Coleraine- participants will be in capable hands, with his aptitude in coaching foil and sabre.
National Liaison and Media Chief, Melvin Flores-Yañes
Melvin is our chief of media and national liaison within the country he knows so well.
A Honduran national and seasoned reporter, Melvin acts as our guide to Belize, utilising his hefty contact book to promote the programme. He returns once again to help the people of Belize by acting as a key puzzle piece in nurturing the future and wellbeing of its youth.
Social Media and women's speaker Gabrielle Swan
As a Northern Irish journalist, Gabrielle works on our social media. She will be documenting the team’s journey during the duration of the project, filming everything from cultural excursions to fencing workshops.
With her position, she will be gathering the thoughts and stories of programme participants.
As a fencer of six years, half of which was spent fencing épée, she will also be sharing her experience as a woman in sport, seeking to inspire young women and girls taking part to be unafraid of taking part in the often-male dominated arena.
